WESSA set up a veggie tunnel

Sometimes we get invited to community projects. For this one we went along with some staff from Nedbank to help put up a veggie tunnel in a school. This was all brought about by WESSA. They have a fantastic program called Eco-schools where they go into underprivileged areas and educate children and adults involved in a particular school in the area on how to live in a sustainable way. The principles of sustainability are covered as well as practical ways to make a difference just by changing your own actions. Each school is kitted out with a rainwater harvesting tank, a parabolic solar cooker as well as veg garden tunnels. These pics document a day spent putting up a tunnel and getting the first crop of spinach planted. Moving the sand is pretty back breaking but it’s an incredibly satisfying task at the end of the day. I’m pleased to say that at least one of the schools that has participated in this project is now able to fully support their school feeding scheme from veggies grown on the school property and no longer need outside assistance. Woo Hoo!!
