Christ Church Children’s Care Center is located in Berea and looks after about 80 orphaned, abandoned and neglected children. Many of them come from one of the poorest squatter camps in Gauteng, ironically named ‘Freedom Park’. An outside organisation has a weekly soup kitchen for homeless people from the surrounding areas and we went along to help prepare and serve the food. Since most of the work had already been done before we arrived we had a wonderful opportunity to spend some fun time with the kids from the orphanage before lunch. If you think you can’t get mushy about anything then come and do this and you’ll be proven wrong. These bright little faces and requests for hugs and special attention melt your heart and before you know it the only thing you want is to be able to take one of these children home with you and give them a family. Eventually it was time to go up to the worship service before lunch and I (Faith) was astounded at the sincere worship pouring out of the mouths and hearts of these precious people who have absolutely nothing and no one in the world. I was humbled. What an incredible privilege to use our hands to feed these beautiful people, to look them in the eye and acknowledge their humanity and let them know that they are loved after all...
