We were lucky enough to see Rod and Adele's garden before they packed up for pastures new. This being a space close to their hearts we decided it would be best if the Uber creative gardeners described it to you in their own words.
'When Adele first found the cottage she immediately took it; the garden spoke to her and she was enthralled. As are many gardens in Tzaneen, the garden tended to wild, but Adele attacked all invaders and dying undergrowth with a vengeance; once thinned out, the garden was ours and became our pet project.
A permanent work in progress; each day a new piece was found and added, we watched as the garden grew.
First off, our intention was to create a garden which was not for show, but rather an interactive garden, inviting one to walk amongst the plants and pieces. All pieces had had other uses in their previous lives, the fans no longer worked, the television was blown and the mannequins once strutted in shop windows. Art works found places in this Eden, mirror murals allowed faceted reflections which fought with the reflected light spinning around the garden from the sun’s reflection off the crystals and mirror shards.
The garden in turn showed its delight by constantly offering movement, whether it be windblown or reflected.
When an old used satellite dish was to be thrown out we placed it in the garden, filled it with water and watched as the birds bathed and explored, pecked against mirrors and fed from the bounty on offer; a Disneyworld for birds.
An old pair of Crocs serve as a pot for plants, as does a tea pot and old tins. Anything able to act as a plant pot is fair game, old car tires act as reservoirs for thirsty plants and an array of candles, as well as a candle chandelier ensure that the garden is enhanced in the evening.
Sadly we were not able to fit the final piece, we had decided to fit an outside bath and shower, finding a bath proved difficult and with our leaving we were saddened by the fact that this garden of introspection, pleasure and joy would never be completed, hopefully we will find a old bath for our new home.
Last week I went to collect the last few things, the garden now looks sad and I suppose normal once more, but it is no longer the very special place that it once was to Adele and I.
The good news is that the Garden of Delight Mark ii is already under construction'.
